Guidance
From writing your first essay to dissecting your first frog, getting your first pimple to going to your first prom…. high school can be a little overwhelming. GUIDANCE Here at Mercy, we realize that the weight students carry in their backpacks is not their only source of stress and anxiety. The guidance department offers students a warm and supportive environment to address and hopefully resolve the daily challenges and the personal struggles of life. HOW: Many options are available to students who wish to talk about various issues. They simply need to request a meeting one of three ways: 1) directly speaking to Mrs. Hoskins the Director of Guidance in person, 2) emailing her at mhoskins@olmbobcats.org, or 3) informing a teacher who will relay the request for them. WHAT: The guidance counselor is an ear to listen. Everyone needs someone to talk to. Many students find it difficult to speak to their parents for fear of being fussed at or punished. They have difficulty speaking to friends at times for fear of ridicule, rumors or reputations. Having the counselor as a safe, informative and positive source for questions and answers is a wonderful alternative to not talking at all. It is the mission of the counselor however to ultimately help the student become self reliant, while simultaneously understanding and appreciating the value of supportive parents/guardians. The guidance counselor is also the person students may come to who will function as a mediator between the teacher and student. Students perform at their best when they have a strong and solid rapport with their teachers. Counselors know this and work diligently to keep the lines of communication open between the two.
WHERE: The counseling department is centrally located between the front office and the chapel. Students have access to the counselor’s office from the religion hallway. Students are not permitted to enter through the front office unless otherwise specified by a teacher or administrator. This location is also the meeting place for lunch and learns. Lunch and Learns are very informative and a lot of fun. Students will bring their lunch to the guidance department where they will gather information and discuss such topics like anxiety, peer pressure, body image and self esteem, depression, drugs and alcohol, dealing with death and grief, stress and time management etc. WHEN: Students are able to visit the guidance department either during the lunch/study hall hour or after school until 4:00p.m. In some instances students will see the counselor during class time, however normally that is for emergency purposes needing immediate intervention. Students as well as parents are invited to visit the guidance department as often as possible. WHY: While the counseling department seeks to meet the emotional and personal needs of our students, a primary function of the guidance counselor is to hopefully ensure the academic success of every student as well. The counselor will continually check the academic standing of every student by reviewing transcripts regularly. If a student finds himself/herself falling behind with grades the counselor is a powerful resource for students to take advantage of their help, advice and solutions. The Mercy family including all faculty and staff recognize the truth in the statement “it takes a village to raise a child”. The guidance department strives to make a difference in the lives of our young adults and their journey toward a healthy, happy and successful future.
