Did you know…St. Lorenzo Ruiz was the first Filipino saint. He worked as a calligrapher for the Dominicans and an active member of the Marian confraternity. In 1636, he was sent on a mission expedition to Japan where he was arrested and killed for being a Christian. He was beatified by Pope John Paul II in Manila and later canonized in 1987. Saint Lorenzo Ruiz holds the distinction of being the first person beatified outside the Vatican.
